International Literacy Day

international_literacy_dayCary Elementary will be celebrating International Literacy Day on Monday, September 9, 2013, with a school-wide DEAR (Drop Everything and Read). Grades 3-5 will be paired up with grades K-2, where the students will read in groups of 2-3.

This year, the International Reading Association has adopted the theme “Invent Your Future.” Its goal? To inspire students to dream big!

International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8, focuses attention on worldwide literacy needs. More than 774 million of the world’s adults (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) do not know how to read or write, and roughly 123 million children lack those same skills, and are often denied any access to education.

Stay tuned next week for pictures of Cary Elementary’s International Literacy Day!
