Important Reminder: Free and Reduced-Price Meals

We want to make sure all qualified families are enrolled for free and reduced-price meals. The application for meal benefits must be completed annually. If your family qualifies and you have not completed an application for the 2015-16 school year, we ask that you complete an application now.

For families who qualified for the 2014-15 school year, we have continued to provide school lunches for students this school year. On October 7th any student without an approved application for 2015-16 will be expected to pay full price for breakfast and lunch.

Application forms are available at all school sites. You can get information on the Meal Benefits Program online at http://www.wcpss.net/Page/1849 or talk with your school. You can reapply at any time throughout the school year.

Queremos asegurarnos de que todas las familias que son calificadas están inscritas para las comidas gratis o de precio reducidos. La aplicación de beneficios de comida debe de ser completada anualmente. Si su familia califica y no ha completado la aplicación para el Año Escolar 2015-16, le pedimos que complete una aplicación ahora.

Para las familias que fueron calificadas en el año escolar del 2014-15, nosotros hemos continuado proporcionando los almuerzos escolares para los estudiantes este año escolar. Pero en Octubre 7 cualquier estudiante que no tenga una aplicación aprovada para este año escolar 2015-16 se esperará que pague precio completo para los desayunos y almuerzos.

The event will be held at Millbrook High School, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh, NC for all Wake County Public School families.

The summit will provide families with a variety of informative and engaging workshops on academics and social/emotional development to share strategies on student success. Separate Spanish workshops for our Latino families will be offered, including interpretation services in Arabic, French, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese upon request.

The conference is free of charge and includes a continental breakfast and information fair.

On October 9, any student without an approved application will be expected to pay full price for breakfast and lunch. Students without money will be served fruits and vegetables in the serving line.

WCPSS Superintendent’s Direct Line events

bnr-20130114-SuperDirectLiineWake County Public School System (WCPSS) Superintendent James Merrill is inviting WCPSS employees, parents, and the public to share their thoughts, concerns, and priorities for WCPSS in a series of community input events entitled Superintendent’s Direct Line.

Dr. Merrill has reserved the first hour-and-a-half of each event specifically for teachers and other WCPSS employees. The last hour-and-a-half is open to parents and the public. Interested speakers may begin signing up on-site at 4:00 p.m. each day in the lobby of the school auditorium. Each speaker is allotted three minutes and one appearance at the Superintendent’s Direct Line events.

Speakers are reminded that the Superintendent’s Direct Line is a public event; therefore, personnel issues should not be voiced during this time. Caution should be exercised before sharing private student matters.

Upcoming Superintendent’s Direct Line dates (All events are held in the school auditorium):

  • February 3 – Southeast Raleigh High
  • February 17 – Wakefield High

Afternoon and Evening Schedule for each event:

  • 4:00 p.m. Speakers for Employee and Parents & Public events may begin signing up in the lobby of the auditorium
  • 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Superintendent’s Direct Line for Employees
  • 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. (Break) Speaker sign-up continues until all slots are full or 6:45 p.m.
  • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Superintendent’s Direct Line for Parents and the Public

Mrs. Harris is one of the 5 finalists for Wake County Public School System’s Assistant Principal of the Year for 2013-2014. She has been an integral part of the Cary Elementary family since 2010. The results will be revealed at a principal/assistant principal banquet on October 17, 2013.

Parent Academy classes have started!

ParentAcademyTo promote continued cooperation between families and schools, WCPSS is offering Parent Academy – a series of classes, workshops and events aimed at helping families learn to engage with the school system and positively contribute to their child’s academic and social success.

The Winter/Spring Parent Academies started January 15, 2013!

We are very excited to offer a variety of workshops presented by WCPSS subject matter experts. The objective is to provide parents with the tools needed to support their children’s academic and social success. These workshops are free to WCPSS parents, and free child care for children ages 4-13 years old will be provided. Topics, presented in English and Spanish, include:

  • Understanding Common Core and Essential Standards
  • Technology Tips for Academic Success
  • Planning your Pathway to College and Beyond
  • Supporting Health and Nutrition at Home
  • K-12 Assessments
  • Transitioning from Elementary to Middle and from Middle to High School
  • Keeping Children Safe in School
  • Is Life in the Digital World Useful or Dangerous?
  • Preparing your Child for the EOG
  • Identify and Protect Your Child Against Bullying

State recognizes 50 Wake County schools for positive behavior intervention and support

The Department of Public Instruction recently honored 50 Wake County schools for implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS strives to build favorable school climate and increase academic learning time. PBIS is a nationally recognized research-based best practice designated by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the “Ideas that Work”. The mission of the PBIS Coach Team is to empower adults within a school with the skills needed to improve overall classroom and school climate to achieve higher academic performance for all students. Implementation is supported by Intervention Services/Student Support Services.

The state honored 15 WCPSS schools with the top honor of Exemplar School:  Briarcliff ES, Cary ES, Farmington Woods ES, Lake Myra ES, Lead Mine ES, Middle Creek ES, Mount Vernon School, North Forest Pines Drive ES, Northwoods ES, Smith ES, Swift Creek ES, Underwood ES, Vance ES, Wilburn ES, and Wiley ES.

Sixteen schools earned honors as a Green Ribbon School:  Apex MS, Carroll MS, East Garner ES, Forest Pines ES, Forestville Road ES, Fuquay Varina HS, Heritage ES, Holly Grove ES, Holly Ridge ES, North Garner MS, Oak Grove ES, Salem MS, Sanford Creek ES, West Cary MS, York ES, and Zebulon MS.

WCPSS School Choice Survey

The Wake County Board of Education would like parents of all current and incoming students to complete a survey about the choice selection process for 2012-13 school assignments. The questions will take you only five to 10 minutes to complete, and the results will help the board and district to make decisions and better serve our families.

You can take the survey online by following the link www.wcpss.net/feedback/surveys. We also have paper copies of the survey in our office. Whether you participated in the choice process or choose to keep your pre-assignment for next year, we want your input. Please take the survey!

La Junta Escolar del Condado de Wake le gustaría que los padres de todos los estudiantes actuales y de que ingresaran  completaran una encuesta sobre el proceso de selección de asignación de escuela para el  2012-13.
